Discover the Unexpected: Your Ultimate Guide to Singapore’s Hidden Gems

This year, Singapore has cemented its status as a must-visit global destination. A combination of strategic moves, including opening visa-free access to Chinese nationals in February and hosting a myriad of high-profile concerts like Taylor Swift in March and Bruno Mars and IU in April, has significantly enhanced its allure. What was already a premier travel hub has now become even more irresistible.

We previously published an extensive guide to Singapore’s attractions. Recently, an invitation from the Singapore Tourism Board allowed us to explore this beautiful city-state more deeply. It was an adventure marked by extraordinary experiences that truly showcased an unexpected side of Singapore. When it comes to uncovering unique activities in a travel destination, it pays to follow the experts. Urban Exploration: Gardens by the Bay

Singapore’s urban landscape is a marvel in itself. Despite its compact size of 733.2 square kilometers (data from 2022), roughly 0.6 times the size of Shanghai’s Pudong, Singapore has transformed into a developed nation in just over five decades. Consistently ranking high in global wealth metrics, Singapore excels not only in wealth but also in sustainability, being the first in the World to be recognized as a “Sustainable Tourism Destination” by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.

Gardens by the Bay is an iconic attraction divided into Bay South Garden, Bay East Garden, and the Conservatories. The 18 towering Supertrees within the lush gardens create a lasting impression with their bold colors and futuristic shapes. We explored four key attractions thoroughly:

Supertree Observatory

The 50-meter (16-story) observatory offers 360-degree views of Singapore’s skyline, from Marina Bay Sands’ SkyPark to the shimmering Flower Dome.

OCBC Skyway

This 22-meter high aerial walkway offers interactive views among the Supertrees, lighting up in a kaleidoscope of colors at night, like stepping into a science fiction movie.

Cloud Forest

Featuring an indoor misty mountain landscape and one of the World’s tallest indoor waterfalls, this attraction is a refreshing retreat with its lush plant life and cool air.

Flower Dome

A Guinness World Record holder for the largest glass greenhouse, housing plants from multiple continents. The seasonal exhibitions, like dahlias or cherry blossoms, complement the global flora.

A tip: dine at Hortus Restaurant inside the Flower Dome. The prices are reasonable (around SGD 50 per person), and entrance to the Flower Dome is free for restaurant guests.

Peranakan Museum

Deep dive into Singapore’s multicultural heritage at the Peranakan Museum. Initially constructed in 1912, the museum features eclectic decor and was reopened in 2008 after a renovation. Through art, fashion, and family traditions, learn about the fusion of various cultures, such as Chinese-Malay, Arab, European, and more.

True Blue Restaurant

Just minutes from the museum, this Michelin-recommended restaurant offers an authentic Peranakan dining experience in a setting akin to a private museum. Standout dishes like the Black Nut Braised Pork provide a rich culinary glimpse into Peranakan cuisine.

Sidecar Ride

Experience the city from a vintage Vespa sidecar, a unique offering known as “Little Sheep Sidecars.” Traverse routes like the F1 racing circuit while enjoying the architectural marvels of Singapore’s CBD.

Zoo Tour

Singapore’s zoos emphasize natural habitats, breaking free from the captivity stereotype associated with traditional zoos.

Singapore Zoo

Known for its open layout and natural barriers, it houses over 2,400 animals. The Wild Breakfast at Amin Restaurant offers an up-close experience with an orangutan and other exotic animals amid lush greenery.

Jurong Bird Park

Asia’s largest bird park, home to over 400 species. A comprehensive setup of varied habitats allows for intimate bird-watching experiences. Dining at the flamingo-themed Crimson Restaurant adds a special touch to your visit.

Night Safari

The World’s first nocturnal wildlife park is designed to let you explore the lives of night creatures without disturbing them. With experiences like guided tram tours, walking trails, and live shows, the Night Safari offers a distinct adventure after dusk.

Parting Tips

As you prepare to leave Singapore, take time to shop at Changi Airport, which has been voted the World’s Best Airport a dozen times. Don’t miss the mesmerizing Rain Vortex at Jewel Changi, an awe-inspiring combination of nature and urban design.

In Conclusion

Singapore is more than its skyline and city lights; it’s a blend of cultures, cuisines, and unique experiences. With meticulously planned infrastructure, sustainable tourism practices, and diverse attractions, it offers a little something for everyone. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or cultural immersion, Singapore’s dynamic offerings will undoubtedly make your journey memorable.
